Made by hand, kept in the family.
For over three decades, Bandhini Design House has been one woman's vision, one family's craft, and an enduring partnership with artisans in India. A second-generation Australian business, made for the homes we live in.
It started with a single thread.
In 1993, Tai founded Bandhini Design House on Australia's Gold Coast. At a time when most home textiles were mass-produced and machine-made, she chose a different path — travelling to India and forming relationships with master artisans whose techniques had been passed down through generations.
Block printing, hand looming, embroidery worked in tiny mirrors and beads — these were the slow crafts she wanted to bring into Australian homes. Not as souvenirs of somewhere else, but as honest objects, made well, designed to be lived with.
That philosophy still shapes every collection. Tai remains the creative director of the studio today, guiding the design direction, the colour stories, and the relationships with the artisans she's worked with for more than thirty years.
Thirty years, one family of artisans.
Our pieces are made in partnership with a workshop in India that we've worked with since the very beginning. The same families, the same hands, often the same looms — sons and daughters now working alongside the parents Tai first met decades ago.
This isn't a supply chain. It's a relationship. Every cushion cover, throw, and bed cover passes through hands that know our standards intimately, because they helped shape them.
A son carrying it forward.
Bandhini Design House is now run by Sharm — Tai's son, and the second generation of the family in the business. Where Tai brings the creative eye and the deep artisan relationships, Sharm brings the operational craft: building the systems, the digital platforms, and the partnerships that allow a small Australian business to reach homes around the world.
It's a quietly modern arrangement. Two generations, two skill sets, one shared belief — that home textiles should be made by people who care, sold by people who answer the phone, and designed to last well beyond a trend cycle.
Under Sharm's stewardship, BHD has grown its trade programme, opened its first dedicated showroom on the Gold Coast, and begun shipping directly to customers in the United States — extending the same considered process Tai started in 1993 to a global community of homemakers.
Three quiet principles, thirty years on.
The things that mattered to us when we started are the same things that matter now.
Made by hand.
Nothing in our collection is mass-produced. Every piece is hand-loomed, block-printed, or embroidered by artisans whose work we know by name. Hand-made is slower. It's also better.
Designed in Australia.
Every collection begins on our Gold Coast studio floor — the colour palette, the print direction, the silhouettes. We design for Australian homes first, and find they translate beautifully anywhere.
Built to last.
We make things to be lived with, washed, layered, and kept for years. Not styled for a single photograph. The best compliment a customer gives us is "I've had it for ten years."
Designed entirely around you.
A significant part of our business is what we make to order. Our bespoke program gives clients the ability to design any piece — any size, any palette, any technique — to suit a specific space, brief, or vision.
From single custom cushions for a private home, to full textile programs for hotels, retreats, and retail spaces, we collaborate directly with designers, architects, and procurement teams to bring ideas to life through the same artisan workshop we've worked with for over thirty years.

A small Australian studio, quietly global.
Today, Bandhini Design House operates from a Gold Coast showroom and studio in Tallebudgera Valley, with a small team that handles everything from design and photography to packing and shipping. Every order goes through hands that care.
We supply homes, designers, and retailers across Australia, and now ship directly to customers in the United States. We are still independent, still family-run, and still doing things the way Tai started doing them in 1993 — just with a few more tools, and a few more friends.
